Their signature dish is the free-range pork tasting plate of loin belly cheek and black pudding (€22.95), but you’ll also find blackboard specials such as sole and braised meats. Wed–Sat 6–10pm, Sun 4–10pm.

Aunty Lena’s Irish Pub Main St 061 396114, auntylenas.com. The extensive bar menu offers salads, sandwiches, wraps and panini, plus bangers and mash and burgers (mains around €13). In summer, traditional music is on Fri. Food served daily 9am–11.30am & noon–9pm; bar daily 9am–11.30pm.

The Good Room Café Main St 061 396218. A calming bistro café with outdoor seating, serving breakfast, lunches and early evening meals. Has a large selection of teas, including detox and caffeine-free varieties, plus juices, smoothies and healthy options. Mon–Wed 8.30am–­5.30pm, Thurs–Sat 8.30am–7.30pm, Sun 10am–5.30pm.

The Mustard Seed Ballingarry, 8km south of Adare on the R519 069 68508, mustardseed.ie. Set in Echo Lodge, a country residence (offering stylish B&B accommodation), this is one of the country’s foremost restaurants, with an inspired modern Irish menu drawing from the produce of its organic garden. The four-course “classic” dinner is €62; main courses include rib-eye of beef, monkfish and guinea fowl. A cheaper dining option is the twilight menu (Mon–Fri & Sun 6.30–7.30pm) at €48, featuring fish, lamb or organic shitake mushrooms. Dinner daily 7.15–9.30pm.

Wild Geese Restaurant Rose Cottage, Main St 061 396451, thewild-geese.com. Delicious food served up for breakfast, lunch or dinner in a picture-postcard cottage. Evening cuisine might include pan-seared scallops with pork belly, roast Atlantic cod with crabmeat, or lamb and chicken dishes. Quality doesn’t come cheap – the early bird menu (6–7pm) is €30 for two courses, €37 for three. Tues–Sat 6.30–9.30pm, Sun 12.30–3pm.
